New Google Earth Satelitte Launch This Week

Saturday, August 30, 2008 | , , , ,

In Five days (Sept. 4 2008), if nothing wrong happens, New Google Earth Satelitte will launch this week. This satellite named GeoEye-1.

Google's current imagery in Google Earth spans a range of resolution, the coarsest being 15 square meters per pixel, which is only good enough to see larger geographic features. With this new satellite Google Earth capable up to 1,65 meter resolution. However 3 meters resolution will mostly more suitable in cost of bandwidth arround the world.

Google Earth will start collecting new image with bigger resolution from new satelitte after few month from launch date due technical and legal matters.

After a lengthy U.S. Government interagency review, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) notified commercial imagery providers that the 24-hour hold rule that was required for imagery at a resolution better than .82-meter is no longer in place. On June 29, 2007, GeoEye’s commercial remote sensing license was modified to reflect this change. This means that when GeoEye-1 launches in September 2008, GeoEye will be able to sell imagery as soon as possible after it has been captured.

Besides the unrivaled spatial resolution of 0.41-meters or about 16 inches, GeoEye-1 is designed to have three-meter accuracy, which means that customers can map natural and man-made features to within three meters of their actual locations on the surface of the Earth without ground control points. This level of accuracy is unsurpassed. At 0.41-meter resolution, GeoEye-1 would be able to 'see' home plate on a baseball diamond and be able to precisely locate it within three meters of its true location on the surface of the globe. As far as imagery collection, in the panchromatic mode (black and white mode) the satellite will be capable of collecting up to 700,000 square kilometers in a single day and in the multispectral mode (colour mode) 350,000 square kilometers per day. Spatial resolution, geolocation accuracy and large-area coverage are the three specifications that commercial and government customers desire most.

Improvement From Fuel Cell Technology

Fuelcell Technology experienced the big jump with results of the expert's findings in polymer chemistry of LIPI Indonesia, Dr. Sunit Hendrana about the sulfonasi process for the production of the polymer membrane fuelcell.
Sunit just won Research And Technology Medco Energi Award on the Awakening Day of Nasional Technology (Hakteknas) in Ritech Expo 2008 Jakarta that took place on August 8-11 from his research was entitled "Ultra Fast Heterogeneous Sulfonation Technology for the Production" of the "Polimer Fuelcell Membrane".
At 2004-10-20 a group of scientist from LIPI Indonesia registered patent in fuelcell related technology. Dr. Sunit Hendrana; Ir. Imam Junaedi; Dr. Ir. Haifa Wahyu, M,Eng; Undang Wahidin, ST are the team member.
"Technology fuelcell will become 50 percent cheaper with these findings from market price, membrane fuelcell that in the market at this time almost ten thousand dollar per square metre," said Sunit in Jakarta, on Wednesday (13/8). With this technology, the membrane fuelcell also could be made with very fast less than one minute from normal three till eight hours per the membrane. Moreover the membran quality could be better in the high temperature.
Sunit also Chairman Association of the Indonesian Polymer said, in this world just two countries that carried out the research sulfonasi this kind, that is from Indonesia and from Finland. However in Finland the production of the membrane was still necessary time around 3-4 minutes.
Sulfonasi was the process of sticking the cluster sulfanat (SO3H) to the polymer in order to be able to deliver the ion. The research by Sunit was patented, namely the patent about the Process sulfonsi solid gas to the polymer with the closed system and the patent about the Conductif Membrane was based on Polistiren sulfonasi for the Membrane of the Fuel cell.
The production of the membrane has been cleared since 1995. They struggled almost without help of the fund from the government. In 2004, the membrane made by the special team that was chaired by Sunit Hendrana was finished. The membrane was made from polesterin, namely a kind of plastic that was made from the waste of the petroleum outcast. This membrane was typical Indonesia. "Still had one related discovery more that will be patented," added the Doctor from University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia in the Polimer chemical field.

2 Interesting Report from Nano Material Field

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | , , ,

First :

Material that can bends, stretches and still conduct electricity normaly.

Why this is important ? Because this material is made from ruberry polymer that can bend and stretches and still can conduct electricity so it could bring huge improvement in robotics field and implant technology. Think about more realistic knee and elbow for your robot, or, development of such a heart implant and development of an artificial eye implant.
The development of materials that can be shaped and molded to curved surfaces will allow for a whole new class of electronics devices that can be used to better interact with the human body, such as brain monitoring devices.
(Tsuyoshi Sekitani of the University of Tokyo)

Second Report :
Material that bend light backwards

Why this is important (and amazing) ?
Can you imagine having a jacket that makes you invisible ? If this invention can achieve the mass, your dream could come true.

A group of Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley lead by Xiang Zhang, professor at UC Berkeley's Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, report a breakthrough in finding material that can bend light in 180 degree opposite from natural light. This fenomena called negatif index. This material is made from layers of alumunium oxide which contains nano scale silver lens that act as pipe for light.
However this is just labs scale invention. Move to production is another problems.
Why ? Because this material is fragile, so it is far from "jacket" implementation.
But still can this invention apply for invisible laptop or computer case ?

OLPC XO-2 and $12 Computer

Saturday, August 09, 2008 | , , ,

$12 Computer ? What's that ? Is it real or just a joke for today ?
Actually this is real project and being developed right now.

While Nicholas Negroponte Phd and his team prepare second generation of OLPC Laptop called XO-2 to be ready at lowest price level $75, a new and even lower price proposition arise and it's not coming far from Negroponte's old graduated Institute: MIT.

A group of MIT's fresh graduated student come with the idea to use already market available hardware in India as base platform for their product. (Actually this games console is imported from.................you bet right.....................China)
This product is a game console equipped with 2 joystick, 2 air soft gun, a mouse, and an integrated small cpu-keyboard (no RAM). It operates with plug into your TV.

6 person group member plan to add RAM, WIFI-internet, and offcourse : software to lift up this game console more suitable as education tools for children. So dont think about using this computer as your office platform.

Compared with XO-2 that planned to use Window beside Sugar (a customized Linux), the $12 computer project is far beyond real world mainstream application in the world today. So this $12 computer project is easily mis-interpretated as a "real world" computer. We think it is not. At least for now.

As second point is the $12 price. We think it is quite untrue since development stages will involve more additional hardware and new piece of software. But you may think the computer price will still below XO-2 because you dont need a monitor to use this computer. So as easy guess, think about $12 plus $75 devide by 2, we get arround 50 bucks. Still cheap though.

If this young product designer lead by Derek Lomas can achieve success with this project and make it distributable to development country, it would be a remarkable achievement. If they can make WIFI-internet works and web browser also works , then many student arround the world will get benefit and add many function that can be comparable with XO-2 project such us online distance learning.
